As WVU basketball prepares to open the season next week, the Big 12 media have provided more motivation for Ross Hodge’s team.

The results of the Big 12 men’s basketball preseason media poll were announced on Thursday, showing the Mountaineers in the exact same spot as they were when the coaches voted earlier in the month.

West Virginia is once again expected to finish in 11th place in the conference standings. And also just like in the other poll, theyย are only expected to outperform Oklahoma State, Utah, UCF, Colorado and Arizona State (in that order).

Houston, coming off an appearance in the National Championship Game, is projected to win the conference again, with Texas Tech and BYU ranked right behind the Cougars.

Nationally speaking, WVU came in at No. 67 in the 2025 preseason KenPom rankings when they were first released weeks ago.

Where Does WVU Basketball Place in Preseason KenPom Rankings?

The ranking is the 12th best out of all Big 12 programs. WVU is behind No. 1 Houston, No. 12 Texas Tech, No. 13 Iowa State, No. 15 Arizona, No. 17 Baylor, No. 18 BYU, No. 21 Kansas, No. 36 Cincinnati, No. 61 Kansas State, No. 64 UCF and No. 66 TCU.

WVU started last season at No. 87 in the KenPom rankings and ended at No. 51.
