No matter how it ends, the 2023 season will go down as one of the best in WVU baseball history. And now as the Mountaineers prepare for the postseason, two of its leaders are being honored as the best in the Big 12.

First off, West Virginia sipper Randy Mazey, who surpassed 500 career wins in the middle of the season, has been named the Big 12 Coach of the Year. The Mountaineers finished the regular season with a 39-16 overall record and a 15-9 conference mark.

Despite getting swept in their final series of the season by Texas, WVU was able to claim a share of the Big 12 season title.

Mazey couldn’t do it without his player though, especially JJ Werherholt. The Big 12 awarded Wetherholt the honor of Big 12 Player of the Year for his breakout year. Wetherholt hit a league-leading .447, 15 homers, recorded 56 RBI, stole 35 bases, scored 65 runs and posted an .510 OBP and a .786 slugging percentage.

Wetherholt becomes the first Mountaineer to win the award.

WVU begins their pursuit of another Big 12 championship, this one in the conference tournament, on Wednesday against Texas Tech.
