BREAKING: Former WVU DC Tony Gibson expected to land at NC State

According to a report from Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, former West Virginia defensive coordinator Tony Gibson is expected to accept a job as a co-defensive coordinator at N.C. State.

Gibson, a Van, West Virginia native, spent a total of 13 seasons with the Mountaineers during his two stints. He was a staple of the 3-3-5 stack defense that derived from the Rich Rodriguez era.

Gibson also interviewed for the West Virginia head coaching job which ultimately was given to Neal Brown. Many former and current players vouched for him to get the job. Defensive lineman Kenny Bigelow stated to Chris Hall and I on the Between the Eers podcast that, “No one else bleeds more gold and blue than Gibby. I love that man.”

It is unclear if N.C. State will switch to a 3-3-5 scheme of some sorts, but I would expect some variation of it.

The Mountaineers will host the Wolfpack this fall on September 14th, which would be a homecoming for the longtime assistant.
