First Pitch Announced for When WVU Baseball Opens NCAA Regional Play

WVU baseball fans now know when they can watch their Mountaineers begin their fight to claim an NCAA Regional. West Virginia’s opening game in the double-elimination tournament will take place on Friday at 3 pm ET and be televised nationally on ESPN2.

Much like in 2023, WVU baseball will have a postseason beyond the conference tournament to close 2024. And this latest achievement by the Mountaineers is historic for the West Virginia program.

WVU has now reached NCAA Regional play in back-to-back seasons for the first since in exactly 60 years. Current assistant coach Steve Sabins, who will be taking over for the retiring Randy Mazey next season, captured this accomplishment perfectly in a post on X (Twitter).

WVU Baseball Makes Program History with Another NCAA Regional Appearance

Despite a disappointing showing in the Big 12 Tournament, Mazey’s career and the WVU baseball season is not over. The Mountaineers earned an NCAA at-large bid on Monday.

West Virginia landed in the Tucson Region as a No. 3 seed. WVU will face Dallas Baptist in their opening game. Arizona, the top seed and host, Dallas Baptist are the other two teams in the region.

After finishing the regular season with a 33-20 record, WVU went 0-2, failing to win a game in the Big 12 Tournament for the third straight year. But much like last year, West Virginia will advance to the program’s 15th NCAA Tournament appearance nonetheless.

As Mazey leads the Mountaineers to the postseason one last time, he holds a 539–423–2 overall record. Mazey is 8-14 in NCAA Tournament games throughout his career.

The expectation is this is also the final season for star infielder JJ Wetherholt, who is projected to a be a top 10 pick in the upcoming MLB Draft.
