Former WVU Assistant Nelson Hernandez Officially Joins ACC School

After alluding to moving to an ACC school while saying goodbye to West Virginia, former WVU assistant coach Nelson Hernandez has officially been announced as a member of the Virginia Tech staff.
Nelson will serve as Virginia Tech’s general manager after being the director of player personnel and recruiting for the Mountaineers last season. Hernandez now joins fellow former WVU assistant Chester Frazier with the Hokies.
Much like how Frazier exited the WVU basketball program, Hernandez wanted to express his feelings of gratitude about his year in Morgantown before starting his next chapter elsewhere.
โFirst, I wanna give thanks to the creator for gifting me the opportunity to come to WVU. Special shout-out to Chester Frazier who helped me get thru this season. Much love to my dudes Javon Small, Eduardo Andre, Toby Okani, Jake, Buck, Amani, KJ, AB, and the rest of the boys for making this year special. Canโt forget my guys Truck Bryant and to the best managers in the country keep doing what you do!! Love those kids so much,โ wrote Hernandez in a departing letter to fans.
Former WVU Basketball Assistant Expresses Gratitude Upon Exit
โI am forever blessed and thankful to the WVU family and community in Morgantown for embracing me as much as they have. Moving on is never easy but I promise the great fans of this state that your program is in great hands with Wren Baker and Ross Hodge at the helm.
โI will miss my hikes exploring this amazing state. Going to miss my guys at the gun range and will definitely miss my pretzels and late pizza runs. Thank you West Virginia for being uniquely and unapologetically you!!! Gonna miss you but hey Iโll only be four hours awayโฆ. ACC pretzels watch out here I come.โ
Hernandez served West Virginia as the director of player personnel and recruiting after spending a season with Oklahoma State.
Before Oklahoma State, Hernandez had been at plenty of different schools and had many titles within the game. Hernandez has worked as video coordinator for Utah State (2010-14) and Clemson (2014-15), director of player development at Wright State (2015-16), director of basketball operations at VCU (2016-17) and LSU (2017-22).
