WVU recruit Matt Sieg with Fort Cherry in WPIAL title game

Right before kickoff of the biggest game of the weekend, a top recruit being pursued by WVU announced his commitment to Penn State.

Matt Sieg (6-foot, 180 pounds), a four-star 2026 prospect out of Western Pennsylvania’s Fort Cherry, revealed his decsion on Saturday afternoon.

“The best in PA, stay in PA,” said Sieg as part of his announcement on social media.

Sieg has been one of the most highly coveted recruits in the region, holding major offers from Arkansas, Nebraska, Pitt, Syracuse, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Wisconsin in addition to West Virginia and Penn State. He plays quarterback in high school, but is viewed as a safety by the Nittany Lions.

Former WVU assistant Dontae Wright officially extended an offer to Sieg last October, and the offer led to an unofficial visit for the game against Oklahoma State. He returned to Morgantown multiple times, including for the 2024 season opener against Penn State.

“I like their offense and it’s very fun to watch,” Sieg told WV Sports Now after his Junior Day visit. “I like that it’s uptempo and high-powered. I think I could definitely succeed there no matter where I play, just off of scheme, but I also think there are great coaches and all the tools to further develop my game in all aspects.”

Sieg was elevated to a four-star recruit by 247 Sports six months ago.
