Jayden Stone to Redshirt, Unsure About Return to WVU

Jayden Stone will redshirt and not play for the Mountaineers this season, WVU head coach Darian DeVries announced Friday.
Stone, who transferred from Detroit Mercy in the offseason, did not appear in a game this season for West Virginia. He missed the beginning of the year with a preseason injury, but DeVries recently said his absence has been due to personal issues.
DeVries said he and Stone have not yet talked about him potentially returning to play for WVU in 2025-26.
โWe havenโt had those discussions yet,โ DeVries said, โbut for right now, this is the best thing for him.โ
Stone will not have to apply for a medical redshirt because he has not appeared in a game this season, meaning his eligibility for next season is assured. Stone warmed up prior to a few games earlier this season, but never made it onto the court. He has not been on WVUโs bench during games recently.
Stone averaged 20.8 points, 2.7 assists and 5.6 rebounds for Detroit Mercy last season. In WVU’s charity exhibition against Charleston back in November, Stone scored two points in 19 minutes with four rebounds, an assists and a steal.
The update on Stone was the second redshirt announcement DeVries made this week, also announcing that his son, Tucker DeVries, underwent season-ending surgery and will be applying for a medical redshirt to play next year.
WVU basketball minus Jayden Stone and Tucker DeVries will host Utah tomorrow for a 5 p.m. tipoff inside the Coliseum. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
