NCAA Cancels Winter and Spring Championships

The NCAA has canceled the remainder of its 2020 winter and spring championships, the governing body of collegiate athletics announced on Thursday afternoon.

That means scheduled 2020 men’s basketball tournament, which was set to begin on Tuesday, will not be played. The same goes for the rest of the winter sports championships, including gymnastics, indoor track, swimming and diving, women’s basketball and wrestling.

“Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships,” the organization announced.

“This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”

Spring sports, such as baseball, lacrosse, outdoor track and softball, will also not have championships played this year, though whether or not play continues will be decided by individual leagues.

The announcement ends the season of the Robert Morris and West Virginia men’s and women’s basketball teams, which would have likely taken part in the tournaments.
