West Virginia Director of Athletics Shane Lyons announced on Thursday afternoon that WVU women’s basketball assistant Nitra Perry will serve as the team’s interim head coach. Perry will be in position as the university does a nation-wide search to replace the recently retired Mike Carey.

Carey retired on Wednesday after 21 seasons in Morgantown as WVU’s head coach.

“I want to thank Nitra for stepping in to fill this important role, while we conduct a search for our new women’s basketball coach,” Lyons said. “Nitra has more than 20 years of playing and coaching experience, and I know she will provide the leadership we need in this transition period.”

Perry has been with West Virginia for the past two seasons. Perry has previously been with Gerogia Tech, Mississippi State, Toledo and Memphis as an assistant coach, while serving as Kennesaw State’s head coach from 2012-16.
