Sources tell national reporter Adam Zagoria that WVU G Jose Perez is expected to hear back from the NCAA regarding his transfer waiver appeal by next Wednesday, Jan. 11. The NCAA denied Perez’s wavier on Dec. 16 and West Virginia basketball sent in an appeal the following week.

Perez has one year of eligibility remaining. Depending on the decision from the NCAA, Perez will either be able to finish out this season or play the entirety of the 2023-24 season.

Perez committed to WVU in late October after his head coach Steve Masiello was dismissed at Manhattan. West Virginia got in contact with Perez just hours after his transfer portal entry and landed a commitment from him five days later. Perez enrolled for WVU’s spring semester in mid-November but was not allowed to practice with the team until Dec. 17.

Perez spent the last season at Manhattan, averaging 18.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists. The guard shot 40 percent from the field, 26 percent from three and 80 percent from the free-throw line. Before his time at Manhattan, Perez played for Gardner-Webb and Marquette.

West Virginia currently sits with a 10-4 (0-2 Big 12) record as they get settled into Big 12 play. WVU dropped the first two conference games on the road to Kansas State and Oklahoma State. Mountaineers will host No. 3 Kansas in Morgantown on Saturday night.
