The moment WVU fired Neal Brown, there was one familiar name that immediately came to mind for some West Virginia fans – Rich Rodriguez. And now WV Sports Now can confirm an earlier report by WVNews.com that Rodriguez will officially interview with WVU in an attempt to get his old job back.

With Rodriguez’s Jacksonville Stat team set to play in the Conference USA Championship Game Friday night, he is expected to officially interview with WVU director of athletics Wren Baker sometime after that this weekend. A victory for the Gamecocks would give Rodriguez his first conference title at the FBS level since his last with WVU in 2007, the same season he left for the Michigan job following an upset 13-9 loss to Pitt that derailed West Virginia’s hopes at reaching the BCS National Championship Game.

Rodriguez, a West Virginia native, currently holds a 189-128-2 overall coaching record. He experienced most of his success while leading the Mountaineers from 2001-2007. At WVU, Rodriguez won four Big East titles and was named conference Coach of the Year twice. He added a third Coach of the Year honor in the Pac-12 in 2014 with Arizona.

In November 2022, WVSNโ€™s Mike Asti asked WVU legend Rasheed Marshall if he would ever want Rodriguez to return as head coach of the Mountaineers during an episode of their past โ€œAll Three Phasesโ€ podcast.

For a related story, Asti detailed why it’s important to look at the total picture of Rich Rodriguez’s career.
