Right around the time WVU learned about the commitment of Jaylen Ellis, defensive lineman Isaac Ukwu said he received an offer from the Mountaineers.

Ukwu tweeted about his offer from West Virginia Tuesday night, which happened only a day after he announced he would be leaving JMU as a grad transfer. Defensive line was among the positions head coach Neal Brown voiced wanting to improve with transfers for this coming season.

Brown also expressed looking for experienced players, and it doesn’t get much more experienced than Ukwu. His college career started back in 2017, but was delayed due to multiple medical redshirts in 2019 and 2020.

Since getting healthy the last two years, Ukwu has posted 83 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, five pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery for JMU. He now has a chance to build off of that production with another program, maybe even a major conference team like WVU.

Besides West Virginia, Ukwu has received offers from Auburn, California, Colorado, Kansas, Liberty, Ole Miss and South Florida.

As it stands, the Mountaineer defensive line will be led by veteran Sean Martin, but he could certainly use another veteran with Dante Stills now pursuing an NFL career. West Virginia’s work to bring in transfer players to help for the 2023 season is far from over.
