BREAKING: Dana Holgorsen officially accepts Houston head coaching position

After weeks of swirling rumors and speculation, we finally have answers.

According to multiple sources, West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen will be announced as the next head coach at the University of Houston.

Pete Mundo of Heartland College Sports reported that Holgorsen had discussions with Houston mega-booster Tilman Fertitta, who has a relationship with Holgorsen from his previous stint at the university. Fertitta is also the owner of the Houston Rockets. Holgorsen previously served as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Houston from 2008-09.

Holgorsen’s contract buyout is $1 million, which was reduced after the calendar year ended. Had Holgorsen accepted the job on or prior to December 31st, the buyout would have been $2.5 million.

Holgorsen will finish his coaching career at West Virginia with a 61-41 record, which puts him only behind Don Nehlen in wins on the schools’ all-time list. Depending on who you ask, his legacy ranges from underwhelming to quite good — a factor that likely played some part in his decision to leave.

Athletic Director Shane Lyons will now be tasked to make his first big coaching hire since taking over for Oliver Luck in 2014.
