Friday saw several key Mountaineers proclaim their loyalty to the WVU football program, but now Saturday morning starts off with one doing the opposite and deciding to leave.

Freshman pass rusher James Heard Jr. is going to transfer and continue his college career elsewhere. Keenan Cummings of 247’s WVSports.com was first with the news.

Considered one of the best young pass rushers by the West Virginia coaching staff, Heard’s departure will force the Mountaineers to change course on their 2024 plans.

WVU coaches were open about trying preserve Heard’s eligibility by having him only appear in a handful of games in 2023. He was going to receive more playing time moving forward, but obviously that’s not going to happen in Morgantown now.

Heard picked West Virginia over several major programs out of high school.
