WVU Football’s Charles Woods Picks Up Conference Honor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Horned Frogs were no match for WVU Football’s redshirt junior cornerback Charles Woods.

In last Saturday’s 29-17 victory in Fort Worth, Texas, Woods registered an interception, his first as a Mountaineer, a fumble recovery, and five tackles, including a tackle for loss.

He returned the interception by TCU’s Max Duggan for 32 yards, and came up huge for the Mountaineers when the defense needed stops. It put the Mountaineer offense in perfect field position, inside the TCU red zone, and the drive concluded with a Leddie Brown rushing touchdown.

Woods transferred to West Virginia from Illinois State in mid-April 2021, and has been on head coach Neal Brown’s list for most improved since preseason. Those accolades also go the attention of the Big 12 Conference this week, when Woods was awarded the Newcomer of the Week honor.

He joins Iowa State’s Brock Purdy (offensive) and Will McDonald IV (defensive), teammate Casey Legg (special teams), and fellow Newcomer of the Week Kansas’ Devin Neal as Big 12 Football Players of the Week.
