WVU Special Teams Loses Another to Transfer Portal

Published

on

WVU Football’s special teams unit already lost long snapper JP Hadley earlier this offseason. Now, redshirt junior punter Evan Matthes is the next to leave.

Despite not seeing game action during his four seasons in Morgantown, Matthes was a core component of WVU’s sideline hype presence.

The “Juice Squad” award is given each game to the player who brings the most energy to the Mountaineer sideline; Matthes won the award after the Long Island win this season and 2020’s 56-10 victory over Eastern Kentucky. Last season, he was also honored at WVU Athletics’ Blue and Golden Globe Awards ceremony as a nominee for “Male Individual Community Service”, alongside teammate Adam Hensley and Swim and Dive’s Jake Williams.

The Reston, Va. native will use his two additional seasons of eligibility as a grad transfer while he pursues a masters degree in the Sport and Exercise Psychology field. He is the latest in a long string of transfers away from the WVU Football program this season.
