2024 signee Carmelo Adkins announced that he is decommitting from WVU, requesting a release of his National Letter of Intent. Adkins signed with WVU in November during the early signing period under Josh Eilert’s staff.

Adkins posted the following on Thursday.

“Very grateful for coach [Jordan] McCabe, coach [Josh] Eilert, Jay Kuntz and the entire staff for giving me an opportunity to play at WVU.

“With the new coaching staff coming in I would like to announce I’ve requested a release from my National Letter of Intent at WVU.

“At this time I will be re-opening my recruitment for the betterment of my academic and athletic career.

“Thanks to all the fans and local media for the support during my recruitment!”

Adkins (6-foot-5) is a combo guard originally from Keller, Texas. Adkins has received offers from Bryant, Holy Cross and West Virginia. Adkins reclassified from 2023 to 2024 for his postgraduate year at PHHoenix Prep OTE. Adkins committed to West Virginia while also understanding the position the current coaching staff was in.

“It sucks knowing that they are in that position right now, but I’m very positive that they’ll be back to coach me next year,” Adkins said at the time. “Obviously it was a risk but I’m a risk taker.”

Adkins took the risk and WVU moved on from Eilert at the conclusion of a 9-23 season, conducting a national search which ended up with Darian DeVries from Drake.

WVU has landed one transfer commitment in Tucker DeVries so far this offseason and losing Seth Wilson (G) and Kerr Kriisa (G) so far.
