The latest update in the ongoing absence of Nicco Marchiol lends credence to what seemed inevitable. The WVU football program is expected to medically redshirt Marchiol. This has been what WV Sports Now expected would be the outcome and has now been reported by Pete Nakos of On3 Sports.

This news comes just two days after WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez provided an update concerning Marchiol, one that said he would be out for this week’s game at BYU.

Rodriguez said Marchiol has seen multiple doctors about his injured foot, first in Colorado and then in Arizona, where heโ€™s currently staying to be close to his family.

โ€œHe called me yesterday. Heโ€™s out in Arizona, I believe. Heโ€™s seeing some doctors out there, and he told me that the one or two doctors that he talked to said that he had a foot problem and that heโ€™s going to be out for several weeks. What I told him is weโ€™ve got great doctors and trainers, so I want our doctors and trainers to communicate with his doctors so they get on the same page and know exactly what it is. Heโ€™s definitely out in the short-term, and then once their doctors talk to our doctors and trainers, we can figure out how long itโ€™s going to be, I guess,โ€ said Rodriguez.

Marchiol last played for WVU in their 41-10 loss at Kansas. He then disclosed a foot injury to Rodriguez and his staff after the game.

A week after being crowned West Virginiaโ€™s hero for leading the Mountaineers to a comeback win over Pitt, Marchiol was only 15-of-27 for 127 yards as WVU struggled to find a rhythm on offense throughout most of the game in Lawrence. He also threw a pick and ran for -4 yards on six attempts on the ground.

Marchiol, who decided to stay an play for Rodriguez after spending three years under Neal Brown, has 720 passing yards, 56 yards on the ground, three total touchdowns and two picks in four game in 2025.

The end of Marchiol’s 2025 season will only intensify the speculation that he has played his last game as a Mountaineer and will transfer to continue his college career elsewhere. Some have even argued this would be the best resolution for both parties because Marchiol doesn’t fit Rodriguez’s offense.
