CBB Coaching Carousel: SMU Fires HC After 2 Seasons

Coaching Carousel

SMU will get involved with the coaching carousel now as they have fired head coach Rob Lanier after two seasons, as first reported by Stadium’s Jeff Goodman. The Mustangs will now join Louisville, Michigan, West Virginia, Oklahoma State and others out of the high-major teams searching for a head coach.

Lanier spent two years at SMU, taking the Mustangs from 10 wins to 20. SMU appeared in the NIT Tournament this week, falling to Indiana State in the first round. Then on Thursday, SMU decided to part ways with a coach that doubled his win total over his two years there.

Goodman continues his report by stating that SMU is looking to throw money at a coach this offseason. Goodman mentions Steve Lutz (Western Kentucky) being a top target but says don’t be surprised if SMU tries to snag a coach like Eric Musselman (Arkansas) with the resources they have.

SMU is scheduled to join the ACC this summer with Cal and Stanford. It appears that SMU will look to invest more in the basketball program as they upgrade conferences.

SMU could get the coaching carousel moving even further than it is. WV Sports Now will provide updates on the coaching movement this offseason, including West Virginia.
