The NCAA Transfer Portal will open back up for college basketball starting on Monday, lasting 45 days until May 1. This will mark the final cycle of the extra COVID years, with the exception of a few rare situations.

As a note, players must be entered into the NCAA’s system by the May 1 deadline. Players can keep their recruitments open after the entry deadline and teams can recruit well into the summer months if they choose to. If a coach is fired after the entry deadline, players on that team are given a free 30 days to decide their options, like West Virginia endured last June after Bob Huggins’ resignation.

Last year, the men’s basketball side had roughly 1,800 players enter the transfer portal, with many having transfer waiver issues. In December, Judge John Preston Bailey issued a temporary restraining order, not allowing the NCAA to use their transfer eligibility rules, since it violates the antitrust law regarding NIL earnings.

The NCAA addressed this upcoming portal cycle, allowing multi-time transfer to leave and be immediately eligible for the upcoming season.

West Virginia is currently going through a national search for its next head coach. It’s unknown how many players will enter the transfer portal for WVU, but it’s normal for programs to lose guys after a coaching change.

WV Sports Now will provide updates on the departures and additions for West Virginia Basketball this offseason.
