Governor Justice Pushes Start of WV High School Winter Sports to March 1

West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced during a Wednesday news conference that the start of high school winter sports in the state will be delayed again with a target start date set for March 1.

“Just think of the numbers we will have vaccinated at that time,” Justice said. “Absolutely, we are very hopeful that this thing is going to turn and we can absolutely go to where we can have the sports indoors. And we can do that starting March 1.”

In November, Justice put a stop to winter sports practices that had already started and pushed the start boys basketball, girls basketball, wrestling and swim team practices at West Virginia high schools to January 11. Prior to Wednesday’s announcement by Justice, the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission adjusted for the January start date with changes to the championship schedule for those sports, including moving the basketball state tournaments at the Charleston Coliseum into April.
