Key Mountaineer Left Behind as WVU Baseball Team Returns Home After Regional Title

There’s one Mountaineer WVU baseball fans were unable to welcome home on Monday after winning the program’s first ever NCAA Regional over the weekend – the retiring head coach.

Unfortunately for Randy Mazey, the team was only able to secure a 30-seat charter flight. And when you factor in the players, the coaches and the support staff, that’s just not enough seats for everyone.

So being the leader that he is, Mazey made sure his players got home in style even if it meant everyone else having to fly commercial.

The commercial flight apparently included a layover in Atlanta, a popular layover spot. Mazey posted about the ordeal and doesn’t seem to mind the experience all that much, granted it’s likely easier to deal with a travel hiccup when after making history.

“Thanks to fans for showing up and welcoming home our Regional champs. We could only get a 30 seat charter back from AZ so I put all players on it and staff are flying commercial. Congrats on getting home early guys, if you need me , I’m in the Atlanta airport, 3 hour layover!” he said on X (Twitter).

However, the Mazey does need to get back to work soon before officially riding off into the sunset. Mazey’s WVU baseball team has a Super Regional to play in this coming weekend.
