As the Carolina Panthers are heading into the final week of the preseason, they have a bit of a dilemma on their hands at the quarterback position.

Starter Cam Newton exited the teams last preseason game in New England and left the stadium with a boot on his left foot. Newton’s also coming off a shoulder injury in which he suffered last season, causing him to miss significant time near the season’s end.

With Newton also entering the final year of his contract, the Panthers decided it would be a good idea to draft a quarterback — insert Will Grier.

Earlier today head coach Ron Rivera gave his quick thoughts on Grier’s performance thus far, “He’s going to help us one day.”

It’s a pretty broad statement, so there’s no telling when that day will be or how much he will help them in the future. Grier has had some troubles adjusting to the NFL, as do most rookie quarterbacks, but he’s also shown some flashes of what he can do once he learns ropes.

With Cam Newton’s status up in the air for week one, the backup battle between Grier and Kyle Allen is now even more critical. If Newton is unable to go or further worsens his injury, Grier or Allen will have to be ready to go.

Rivera was also asked if there were any plans for the team to workout any other quarterbacks and long story short, the answer was no. He likes both guys potential even though he’s been disappointed on ball placement.

So far this preseason, Grier has completed 23 of 43 passes (53.5%) for 196 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

The Panthers will host the Pittsburgh Steelers this Thursday @ 7 pm for the team’s final preseason game.
