A first round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals less than 11 months ago, WVU Baseball product JJ Wetherholt is already winning games in style for Double-A Springfield.

Wetherholt hit a walk-off single in the 10th inning of Springfield’s Thursday, June 12 game against Tulsa, winning a left-on-left matchup despite trailing 1-2 in the count and roping a hit to right field. His single allowed a runner to score from second base, winning the game 4-3: you can watch the heroic hit here.

St. Louis selected Wetherholt with the seventh overall pick last season, the highest selection in WVU Baseball history. He helped the Mountaineers to a Super Regional appearance in the NCAA tournament during his final season, setting a series of program records at the plate after breaking out during the 2023 campaign.

Wetherholt began the 2025 season in Double-A and is slashing .319/.439/.475 with four home runs, 32 walks and nine stolen bases across 45 games this season. He helped the Cardinals’ Single-A affiliate win the Florida State League championship in 2024, logging the game-winning hit.
