West Virginia cornerback target Jermod McCoy

The West Virginia secondary will take a major hit in 2024, with star Beanie Bishop Jr. no longer in the fold, and ShaDon Brown and the coaching staff are hitting the transfer portal for reinforcements.

WVU extended an offer Thursday to Oregon State transfer Jermod McCoy, a 6-foot, 180-pound sophomore cornerback from Whitehouse, Tx., but the Mountaineers certainly weren’t alone.

He’s also received offers from Colorado, USC, Arkansas, Ole Miss, Texas A&M, Auburn, Texas Tech, TCU, Houston, Louisville, Utah, Michigan State, SMU, Oregon and Washington.

McCoy figures to be one of the most highly sought-after targets in the transfer portal this offseason.

McCoy, who played wide receiver and defensive back at Whitehouse High, was an underrated recruit in the class of 2023 who received his only Power Five offer from the Beavers. And it didn’t take long to make an impact.

He played in 11 games in 2023, taking 410 defensive snaps as a true freshman in the defense, and he racked up 31 tackles (16 solo), two interceptions, seven pass breakups and a fumble recovery.

Of course, as a true freshman, he wasn’t perfect either. According to Pro Football Focus, he missed a handful of tackles and was in coverage for four touchdowns allowed in 2023. But he flashed, too, and has the tools to emerge as an impact defender in his collegiate career.

WVU will be in the market for defensive backs this offseason, with Bishop exhausting his eligibility and Hershey McLaurin and Andrew Wilson-Lamp entering the portal. The young cornerbacks on the roster will likely be stepping into increased roles.

And, of course, the transfer portal will be an area that the West Virginia coaching staff targets, too.
