West Virginia’s Mike Hawkins Earns Major Recognition After ‘Great’ Game

In honor of his performance in leading West Virginia to a big win on Saturday night, Mike Hawkins was named one of the Davey O’Brien Award’s “Great 8” for Week 3.

Hawkins exceeded 100 yards passing and rushing for the third-straight game. And in Charlotte, he completed 10-of-17 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns through the air and then added 123 yards on 18 carries and three more scores on the ground as WVU defeated Virginia 38-27.

In addition to Hawkins, the Week list group also includes Trinidad Chambliss of Ole Miss, Northwestern’s Aidan Chiles, Ethan Grunkemeyer of Virginia Tech, Lincoln Kienholz of Louisville, Kentucky’s Kenny Minchey, John Alan Richter of Toledo and Alabama’s Keelon Russell.

The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week, selected from the Great 8 list, will be revealed Tuesday at 11 a.m. (CT).

Every quarterback who makes a weekly “Great 8” through Week 9 automatically gets added to the award’s midseason watch list.

The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977 and is celebrating its 50th anniversary season this year. The National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981.

Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.4 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
