Can WVU win the Big 12 championship? Sounds crazy, but is there actually a chance? At least one major outlet says the Mountaineers could be one of the two teams playing in the title game.

West Virginia is off to a surprising strong 4-1 start that includes going 2-0 in conference play. Already with Big 12 wins over Texas Tech and TCU, the Mountaineers look to continue on their journey to prove doubters wrong after their bye this weekend.

And ESPN, an outlet that initially projected WVU would struggle to win four games all season, is now saying Neal Brown and his team may have a shot at competing for the Big 12 title. The odds are still slim compared to favorites like Oklahoma and Texas, but West Virginia appeared on a graphic posted on ESPN, the mother ship of all national networks.

According to ESPN, WVU has a 7.9% chance to advance to the Big 12 Championship Game at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Besides ESPN now feeling that low percentage is relevant enough to publicize, West Virginia also has the advantage of being able to avoid playing Texas this season.

Obviously, that is not the case for the Sooners, who will battle the Longhorns in the “Red River Rivalry” on Saturday. WVU will be back in action next Thursday in Texas against Brown’s predecessor Dana Holgorsen and Houston.
