West Virginia loses its first transfer player this cycle in defensive back Jaylon Shelton.

The New London, Texas native posted a farewell message to WVU and announced his decision to enter the Transfer Portal Wednesday evening. Shelton has three years left of his eligibility.

After playing both quarterback and cornerback in high school, Shelton started his college career at Tyler Community College. He received a redshirt for his freshman season in 2020 and then saw action in nine games in 2021.

Shelton joined the Mountaineers last year, earning an appearance against Texas Tech. The departure of Shelton does not come as too much of a surprise, but impacts WVU’s depth in the secondary.

Head coach Neal Brown has said defensive back is a position he’s searching for in the portal. WVU did gain a commitment from Minnesota transfer Beanie Bishop two weeks ago.
