The WVU women’s basketball team has earned a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament in the Birmingham Region.

Announced during the NCAA Selection Show Sunday night, the Mountaineers will play either Columbia or Washington, who will play a First Four game. The winner will face WVU as a No. 11 seed.

WVU will play the first two rounds of the tournament in Chapel Hill, hosted by No. 3 seed North Carolina.

West Virginia has a 24-7 record (13-5 Big 12) and made it to the semifinal round of the Big 12 Tournament, losing to eventual champion TCU. WVU had hopes of hosting the first two rounds in Morgantown this season but missed out on earning a No. 4 seed.

Colimbia went 23-6 this season, 13-1 in the Ivy League. Washington was 19-13 and 9-9 in the Big Ten.

This will be the Mountaineers’ third straight NCAA Tournament appearance and its second under second-year head coach Mark Kellogg. Last year, WVU defeated Princeton in the first round before narrowly losing to eventual national runner-up Iowa in the second round.

WVU has now made the tournament four times in the last five years. The last time WVU made the tournament in four of five years was 2013-17. That was during a stretch in which the team made the tournament nine times in 11 seasons under former coach Mike Carey. Kellogg has also made the tournament in four of the last five years, taking Stephen F. Austin in 2021 and 2022.
