West Virginia University’s Mike Montoro, who serves as the Assistant Athletics Director/Football Communications, is one of the 2023 College Sports Communicators Special Awards winners.

One of the longest tenured members of the WVU athletic department, Montoro is the recipient of the distinguished Lester Jordan Award. This award honors exemplary service to the CSC Academic All-America Program.

A 35-year veteran of the athletic communications profession, Montoro joined the WVU athletic communications staff in 2007 as director of football communications. He served in that role until 2021 when he was promoted to assistant athletic director/football communications.

Montoro has served the Academic All-America Committee in a variety of capacities for 27 of his 35 years in the business. He is in his 11th year as one of the national coordinators for the program. In this role, he oversees Division-I football, men’s and women’s track and field/cross country. Previously, he was in charge of all of the Division-I men’s programs.

Montoro is also a member of the CSC Mentorship Committee and has been on the executive board of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association since 2002. He serves as the executive associate director for the organization.

This is far from the first time Montoro has been recognized for his work. He was honored with the NCBWA’s Wilbur Snypp Award in 2006, which honors outstanding contributions to college baseball, and was inducted into Liberty’s Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 1988. Montoro also earned his CSC 25-Year Award in 2015.
