WVU Women’s Basketball Pummels High-Major Opponent on Road
WVU Women’s Basketball won their third straight game to open the 2026-27 season, taking care of Georgia Tech 81-63 on the road.
The No. 24 Mountaineers (3-0) dominated the paint and the offensive glass, scoring 23 second-chance points and 42 points at the rim. Georgia Tech put on a solid passing performance, notching 21 assists against West Virginia’s aggressive defense, but they also committed 19 turnovers.
The Mountaineers opened the game on a 10-2 run that included a pair of three-pointers from senior George Mason transfer Kennedy Harris; Skylar Forbes (23 points) and Gia Cooke (20 points) led the way in scoring, while 6-foot-3 center Khyala Ngodu, formerly of UCF, showed her paint prowess with nine points, ten rebounds and three blocks. West Virginia pushed their lead to 18 points early in the second quarter but the Yellow Jackets managed to reel them back in, answering each Mountaineers’ run and keeping them in striking distance.
A 16-5 run to open the third quarter dealt a body blow that Georgia Tech never recovered from. Six straight points at the start of the fourth pushed West Virginia’s lead close to 30 points, but an 11-0 run as the Mountaineers began rotating out their starters made the final score look more respectable.
Up next, WVU will face Northwestern in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. as part of the Greenbrier Tipoff.
