West Virginia landed four-star recruit James Heard Jr. on Friday, as announced on his Twitter account. Heard is listed as a three-star linebacker on 247Sports, but a four-star defensive end on Rivals.

Heard (6-foot-2, 218-pounds) is actually the second linebacker from St. Joseph Prep School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to commit to West Virginia for the class of 2023 following Josiah Trotter, who committed back on April 15. Both are four stars on at least one of the major recruiting outlets.

He’s a top-10 recruit in the state of Pennsylvania for both outlets, being rated No. 4 on Rivals and No. 10 on 247Sports. This gives West Virginia their second top-10 Pennsylvania recruit in a month after the consensus No. 1 recruit wide receiver Rodney Gallagher III committed a few weeks ago.

Heard committed to West Virginia over 15 other schools. Boston College, Cincinnati, Duke, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami, Mississippi, Nebraska, Penn State, Rutgers, Temple, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Virginia and Virginia Tech were the other schools to offer him.

Heard is the eighth recruit for West Virginia’s class of 2023 which is currently ranked No. 15 on 247Sports and No. 16 on Rivals.
