Big 12 Conference is prepared to set up a 20-game league schedule for men’s basketball beginning in the 2024-25 season. Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark spoke with the media in Kansas City to kick off the media days for basketball.

“Given recent expansion, scheduling and travel are a major priority for us in the conference. For basketball, it’s looking like a 20-game conference schedule for men and 18 for women is in our future,” Yormark said. “We’re working diligently as well. Our schedule is being guided by a few key perimeters: geography, competitive balance, historic matchups and rivalries. More details will be released in the coming weeks.”

The Big 12 converts from the double round-robin format to a schedule to accommodate a 14-team conference this season. Each team will play each other once while featuring road and home-only games to reach 18 games. The conference will say goodbye to Oklahoma and Texas to the SEC next summer while welcoming Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah. Yormark expanding to 20 games protects certain rivalry matchups while featuring more conference games on ESPN and Fox Sports.

“Rivalries and historic matchups are critically important to us,” Yormark said. “It’s most likely that will occur but nothing has been cemented yet.”

It’s unknown how the schedule format would be conducted.
