WVU Football QB Nicco Marchiol

It’s going to be Nicco Marchiol starting under center for the Mountaineers against Texas Tech. That’s according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He was first with the news.

The report does add a final determination on the status of Garrett Greene won’t be made until warmups.

While most have been expecting it would be Marchiol all week, WVU head coach Neal Brown has been noncommittal on announcing Greene wouldn’t be able to play all week. He first said it was “too early to say” just 48 hours after Greene left the win over Pitt on Monday. Brown then left it as something that wouldn’t be official unto the day of the game during his radio show on Thursday.

Brown said Greene had practiced “a little bit” both Wednesday and Thursday and has been rehabbing, but it will be a “game-time decision” if he can play.

Greene’s overall health is not known, but Brown and offensive coordinator Chad Scott did say he won’t play unless he can do what he does best – be athletic. He was seen walking in a boot after the game last Saturday night. Brown also admitted that he reduced the playbook to only 25% of what is normally is once he realized Greene was not going to return in the Brawl.

No matter who is out there, the Mountaineers will be looking to enact some revenge and beat the Red Raiders for the first time under Brown. WVU and Texas Tech are set to kickoff from Milan Puskar Stadium at 3:30 pm ET.
