WVU Football Nicco Marchiol

West Virginia will host Texas Tech for their first Big 12 Conference game this season. The Mountaineers are looking to win their third-straight game, which would be the first under HC Neal Brown. Let’s take a look at the storylines surrounding the game.

Nicco Marchiol to Make First Career Start

It’s going to be Nicco Marchiol starting under center for the Mountaineers against Texas Tech. That’s according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel. He was first with the news.

The report does add a final determination on the status of Garrett Greene won’t be made until warmups.

While most have been expecting it would be Marchiol all week, WVU head coach Neal Brown has been noncommittal on announcing Greene wouldn’t be able to play all week. He first said it was “too early to say” just 48 hours after Greene left the win over Pitt on Monday. Brown then left it as something that wouldn’t be official unto the day of the game during his radio show on Thursday.

Brown Looks for First Win Over Red Raiders During WVU Tenure

There’s no denying history is on the side of Texas Tech when WVU takes on the Red Raiders this Saturday. But how much does the history of a matchup impact a game?

Some will always stick to what’s been going on recently between the two teams when picking a game while others will say nothing from the past matters if the roster are different.

3 Keys to Victory: Smart Play Should Allow WVU Football to Snap Losing Streak to Texas Tech

Neal Brown and his WVU football team are coming off arguably the program’s biggest win in years. Beating Pitt in the Backyard Brawl offered fans a sense of jubilation they haven’t experienced in a long time.

But it’s now time for the Mountaineers to turn the page and move on to the next challenge. That challenge is Texas Tech and an opponent Brown has never been able to beat since arriving in Morgantown. The 2023 Mountaineers have been better than the 2023 Red Raiders to this point, but what’s happened in out of conference play won’t matter if WVU starts out behind in the Big 12.

What does West Virginia need to do to claim its first win over Texas Tech since 2018 and continue proving critics wrong?
