Cam Vaughn Drops Lawsuit, Miami Files Waiver for Him

Just a few days after Cam Vaughn filed a lawsuit against the University of Miami (FL) and the NCAA in Miami-Dade County, requesting a judge to allow him to enter the transfer portal, he’s now decided to end the legal battle, per On3 Sports. Vaughn dropped the lawsuit, although did so based on the agreement that Miami would file a legislative relief waiver to allow him to enter the transfer portal.

Vaughn’s attorney issued a statement to On3 Sports when filing the lawsuit: 

“On August 17, 2026, Miami dismissed Cam and cancelled his scholarship with no written explanation, no identified rule violation, and no hearing. Miami then refused to submit the waiver request the NCAA requires so that he can enter the transfer portal — leaving Cam without the ability to pursue his education or a team to play for. We are asking the court to hold Miami and the NCAA responsible for their failures to Cam, and grant him the relief he needs so that he can continue his education and career.”

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal revealed the news of Vaughn’s dismissal during an April 17th appearance on The Joe Rose Show on 104.3 WQAM. “Cam Vaughn has been dismissed from the team,” said Cristobal without going into much further detail about the decision.

And while Vaughn’s dismissal might be surprising for some, especially weeks before the 2026 season is set to kickoff, it’s not as shocking based on his one season tenure at WVU before transferring to Miami in December.

On Dec. 27, Vaughn revealed his intentions to enter the transfer portal after initially saying he was planning to stay at West Virginia while on Instagram Live. Vaughn wet public about his transfer before Miami was set to play in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.

At that time, WV Sports Now heard from sources within the program that Vaughn’s behavior and attitude won’t be missed. WVU fans also grew frustrated with a belief of a lack of effort at times, culminating in not even running back after an interception in a blowout loss in the regular season finale against Texas Tech.

Rich Rodriguez even brought up other issues with Vaughn during a press conference earlier in the season, saying he needed to be better at route running and other aspects of his game before truly becoming a top receiver.

“There’s also areas he’s got to get better at. He’s only been at the position a couple years. He’s got the ability to make a lot of plays so we’re trying to get him disciplined to the point we gotta throw it to him all the time,” said Rodriguez when asked about how unlock Vaughn in October.

Vaughn caught 35 passes for 541 yards and scored four touchdowns in his debut season as a Mountaineer. He averaged 15.5 yards per catch as the only downfield threat for a struggling offense.

Vaughn followed Rodriguez from Jacksonville State to West Virginia last offseason after making 48 receptions, recording 803 yards and scoring five touchdowns, all team-highs for JSU, during his freshman year in 2024.

Where Vaughn goes from here remains to be seen….
