Rich Rodriguez Explains What’s Holding WVU WR Cam Vaughn Back
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – As far as current players the WVU football staff believes they can win with, Cam Vaughn is at the top of the list. Even with that being the case, Rich Rodriguez still feels Vaughn has room to grow as a player.
When asked what can help fully unleash Vaughn, who made six receptions for 85 yards against TCU, Rodriguez wasn’t shy about detailing what his top receiver can work on.
“There’s also areas he’s got to get better at. He’s only been at the position a couple years. He’s got the ability to make a lot of plays so we’re trying to get him disciplined to the point we gotta throw it to him all the time,” said Rodriguez on Tuesday.
He then pointed to route running, consistency, coming off the ball and recognizing coverage as areas that are holding Vaughn back.
But of course, Rodriguez thinks highly of Vaughn’s potential and wants to see him become great.

“Cam’s a really competitive guys and he’s got the capability of making big plays, probably more so than some others.”
Through eight games, Vaughn has caught 27 passes for 420 yards and scored three touchdowns. He’s averaging 15.6 yards per catch as WVU’s main deep target.
Vaughn followed Rodriguez from Jacksonville State to West Virginia, recording 48 receptions for 803 yards and five scores in 2024.

Let’s see, unable to get consistent separation, lazy route running, low effort blocking, too many drops ….
All true but his biggest problems are an O-line that rarely protects long enough for a QB to make a decent downfield throw and QBs who are usually inaccurate on the rare dropbacks where they have time.
He’s not as good as advertised but still our best offensive player.

Being a freshman QB he might not be use to having to get rid of the ball in 2-3 seconds and you don’t really have enough time to see everybody and where they are at. You will normally will learn most of that your first 2 years. But no interceptions putting up 300 yards that is great. But there’s a lot more to learn. So let’s give him a shot and see.
