Recruiting Roundup: 7.10.18

Over the last week, the Mountaineers received news that they would be in the mix for two high-caliber cornerbacks – Daquon Watts (Atlanta) and Cam Smith (Columbia, SC).

Friday morning, Watts released his top nine schools highlighted by Virginia Tech, Pitt and Ole Miss, along with West Virginia.

Watts (6’2″, 170 lbs) displays great hands, tracks the ball extremely well and gets great jumps on his reads. But what immediately jumps out is his ability to make plays on the ball. As a junior, Watts recorded nine pass breakups and three interceptions. Watts has yet to announce a date for his decision.

As for Cam Smith, he released his top eight on the 1st of the month, and surprisingly, West Virginia made the cut.

Smith (6’1″, 175 lbs) had a breakout junior campaign with 55 tackles, two interceptions and eight pass breakups. With a stellar 2017, the offers started to roll in one after another, and the Mountaineers began to make their own big push for the hard-hitting corner.

It will be a challenge for Dana Holgorsen and the coaching staff to sway him from staying home and picking South Carolina, but being named in Smith’s top eight is a start.

Also, camp season is not quite over. There is still an opportunity for the Mountaineers to win over a few prized recruits during its annual “Showtime Camp” later this month. Some notable visitors, listed below, have been confirmed by sources close to DubVNation.
