Rich Rodriguez Reveals Mindset About WVU Football Adding Freshly Eligible Players

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Based on a recent legal injunction, an entire class worth of players is able to play one more season of college football. And even though this could mean the return of impact players like Jordan Scruggs and Eddie Kelly, two 2025 Mountaineers, Rich Rodriguez remains focused on the players he’s been planning to utilize all offseason.

On Wednesday during his press conference to open fall camp, Rodriguez revealed his mindset when it comes to adding a new player at this late stage in his team’s season preparation.

“Right now we have it on pause…we’re researching it, we’re talking to a few that might be eligible, but we’re not adding anyone right now for sure,” Rodriguez said.

He also said he’s not planning on cutting anyone strictly to replace them with a player now eligible. If a player who has been around all offseason since the spring is processing and “good enough to win with,” as Rodriguez always puts it, they will stay on the roster and be a Mountaineer when the season kicks off on Sept. 5.

“We certainly aren’t going to cut anybody… We have a couple of spots open. Right now we have it on pause.” Rodriguez said it’s chaotic and is researching it.

A couple spots are open, however, leaving the door open for likes of Jordan Scruggs, Eddie Kelly Jr., Fred Perry, Oliver Straw, Jason Chambers, and/or Jacob Barrick, the notable former Mountaineers with a newfound opportunity.
