WVU Basketball HC Darian DeVries with WVU fans

WVU HC Darian DeVries spoke during Big 12 media days on Wednesday, his first of his West Virginia tenure. Here’s what DeVries had to say on the various topics he was asked about.

Opening Statement:

“We’re just excited to get started. It’s been a long process. You’re taking over a job where we had one returning player so getting a staff put together, getting a team put together, and now you get through summer and fall workouts. Getting to that point now where you’re ready to play. We’re just excited about getting started.”

On Travel:

“For us, it’s my first time in the league in having to travel. I think overall coaches and players are pretty resilient in figuring out ways to adapt and adjust their sleep and travel schedules. Then you just find a way to make it work. I think everybody in the league has to travel and go somewhere, and we’re no different. It’s again, something as the season goes on, I think our guys will adjust to as it goes.”

On Coaching in Big 12:

“What I’m excited about is just the opportunity to obviously coach in this league. There’s so many great venues in this league and atmospheres, including ours in Morgantown. I know our players are excited about that as well. You get a chance to compete in places where the fan bases are so passionate about their teams.”

Constructing a Full Roster:

“I told our staff the same thing. We wanted to make sure that we didn’t get in a hurry just to put a roster together, that we were very selective and making sure that we are getting the type of guys that we knew fit us. I thought we’re very happy with the way it all ended up. It took a while, as you mentioned, like when you have to put that many guys together in a short period of time. A great bunch of guys work incredibly hard about the right things and excited to get a chance to coach them.”

On NIL + New Era of College Athletics:

“I think the biggest thing with everything in college sports has changed a lot, and you just have to change with it. That’s the thing that we approach it. We just adjust as the rules change and the guidelines change. You just evolve with them and adapt, trying to make the most of it and do the best job you can. That’s what we tried to do.”

For a related story, WVU head coach Darian DeVries was snubbed on a list of top coaches in new places.

Lord, I hope DeVries brings us a positive basketball season to help us forget about the years of football mediocrity and the disaster that was Bob Huggins in his final years. WVU needs something to cheer about other than soccer.
