WVU Basketball has welcomed Nick Norton to the coaching staff as an assistant and director of player development, per release.

Norton spent three seasons on Drake’s staff under new WVU HC Darian DeVries.

“Nick is a hard worker who brings great enthusiasm and tremendous energy to our basketball program,” DeVries said. “He always has a great rapport with our players and has a strong basketball IQ. Nick fits our basketball staff and our program extremely well.”

Norton held a few titles since joining the Drake staff in 2021: assistant director of operations, director of operations and recently director of player development. Norton played collegiate basketball at UAB (2014-18) and Drake (2018-19). Norton played in the NBA G-League in 2019 for the South Bay Lakers.

Norton’s father, Randy, is the head women’s basketball coach at UAB.

Drake finished with a 28-7 record this season, going 16-4 in the Missouri Valley Conference and then winning the MVC Tournament.

Drake had a top-45 offense in the country, averaging 80 points per game. The Bulldogs shot 37% from three as a team, which is 36th in the country. Drake allowed 70.4 points per contest this past season.

DeVries leaves Drake with a 150-55 (73.2%) record over six years.

DeVries replaces interim HC Josh Eilert, who West Virginia moved on from on March 13. Eilert took over the program for nine months as he filled in after Bob Huggins’ resignation last June.
