WVU guard Jeremiah Bembry is seeking a medical redshirt this season, interim HC Josh Eilert said on Friday. Bembry, a redshirt freshman, has appeared in eight games for the Mountaineers this season.

“He’s looking at trying to get a medical redshirt,” Eilert said. “He told me that he would be pursuing that and if it came down to it, we could certainly try and force the issue with putting him in, but in order for him to be eligible he couldn’t play a certain amount of games. I respected his wishes and we haven’t thrown him in a situation like that.”

Eilert mentioned that Bembry had a nagging shoulder injury following the Fort Myers Invitational trip back in November. Bembry needs a medical reason to prove his case or else this year of eligibility for him will be burned.

“We looked into it. He’s going to be starting that process,” Eilert added.

Bembry received limited playing time when WVU only had eight scholarship players available for the first nine games of the season. Bembry did appear in two minutes vs. Houston on Jan. 6.

Bembry transferred from Florida State to West Virginia this summer after Eilert’s promotion to interim head coach. Bembry did not play for the Seminoles during his true freshman season as he was redshirted. Bembry was a three-star prospect out of Executive Education Academy.

Bembry currently has three years of eligibility after this season with a potential fourth season if granted this medical redshirt.
