WVU G Jose Perez addressed the rumors of him leaving West Virginia’s basketball program on Saturday evening.

Perez released the following statement on Twitter:

“I’d like to debunk all of the rumors now and let my family and Mountaineer Nation know I’m not going anywhere and me and my brothers are determined to do something special this year. Just wanted to calm all this speculation down and get focused on a big offseason ahead. Let’s go!!”

Throughout the week, there was speculation by WVU fans that Perez was leaving for the transfer portal. Rumors spread amongst message boards and direct messages but Perez shut them all down on Saturday.

Perez has been a huge part to WVU’s offseason success so far, helping host many of the transfer portal recruits. Perez has been working with WVU’s Director of Recruiting Jay Kuntz and the rest of the coaching staff in finding some players from the portal that can contribute.

Perez (6-foot-5) transferred to West Virginia in late October after Manhattan head coach Steve Masiello was let go two weeks before the season started. Perez committed to WVU within days of entering the portal in hopes to play this past season. The Bronx, NY native sat out the entirety of the 2022-23 season after being denied a waiver by the NCAA.

Perez last played in the 2021-22 season with Manhattan, averaging 18.9 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists. Perez shot 40 percent from the field. Perez was named the Preseason MAAC Player of the Year.

Perez is one-of-five incoming transfers for West Virginia, joining RaeQuan Battle (G – Montana State), Jesse Edwards (C – Syracuse), Kerr Kriisa (G – Arizona) and Omar Silverio (G – Manhattan).
