West Virginia senior safety Sean Mahone announced on Instagram Thursday afternoon that he will be returning to WVU for the 2021 season.

Mahone, a redshirt-senior, finished fifth on the team with 54 total tackles in 2020. He also had two tackles for loss, an interception and four pass breakups. 2020 was Mahone’s third season as the Mountaineers’ full-time starter at safety. In 2019 he had 80 total tackles, five tackles for loss with two sacks and an interception.

Mahone’s announcement means that the Mountaineers will return nine full-time starters from its top-ranked defense for next season. Joining Mahone in the safety room in 2021 will be All-American Tykee Smith, starter Alonzo Addae, Arizona transfer Scottie Young Jr. and former starter Kerry Martin Jr., who opted out of the 2020 season.
