WVU WR Reese Smith Decides to Enter Transfer Portal

WVU wide receiver Reese Smith will now be on the hunt for another college to finish out his remaining eligibility.

The Kentucky native announced his decision in a message he posted on Twitter Monday afternoon, the first official day players can enter the transfer portal. Smith thanked the coaching staff, everyone else involved with the West Virginia football program and even Mountaineer Nation before stating that after careful thought and prayer he has decided to transfer.

Smith, who is coming off his sophomore season, transferring doesn’t come as much of a surprise since he was open about debating leaving before the 2022 season got underway. At that time, Smith explained a closed door meeting he had with head coach Neal Brown in which he told his coach that he wasn’t satisfied with his role in the offense. Smith said that Brown told him the hiring of offensive coordinator Graham Harrell could open up the possibility of being utilized more in the offense, as opposed to just mostly on special teams.

But for whatever reason, Smith was not able to contribute close to the level discussed. The comparison to a “Wes Welker type” was used at the time. Smith caught just 19 passes for 205 yards and one touchdown during the 2022 season.
