CBB Coaching Carousel: Michigan Off the Board, Hires FAU’s Dusty May

Florida Atlantic HC Dusty May is set to take the Michigan job, as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Sources tell ESPN that Andy Miller, May’s representative, is finalizing a long-term deal with the Wolverines.

This comes in a shocking move as most thought May would turn to Louisville after FAU’s season ended on Friday.

May has been the mid-major darling of college basketball for the past year after taking FAU to the Final Four in 2023. May, who took over Florida Atlantic in 2018, has done an incredible job rebuilding a program with not much history. The Owls made the NCAA Tournament just once before hiring May in 2002. May took FAU to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances the last two seasons.

May replaces Juwan Howard, who was fired on March 15.

Howard, a member of the legendary ‘Fab Five’ team from the early 1990s that reached back-to-back Final Fours, returned to Michigan in 2019 after his professional playing days and an assistant role with the Miami Heat ended. Howard coached the Wolverines for five years, taking the team to the NCAA Tournament in 2021 and 2022. Michigan earned the 1-seed in the 2021 season, reaching the Elite-8 before falling to UCLA.

This move makes things interesting for West Virginia as Drake’s Darian DeVries was linked with the Michigan job. It’s unknown where Louisville goes from here but they’re still the best high-major job available with WVU right behind them. The Mountaineers could very well go with DeVries if Louisville doesn’t pursue him.

DeVries has built a program of consistency during his six seasons at Drake. The Bulldogs have won 20-plus games in each of DeVries’ seasons at the helm, with three NCAA Tournament appearances. Drake has one NCAA Tournament win from the play-in game vs. Wichita State in 2021.

WV Sports Now will provide updates on what’s going on around the country with the coaching carousel.
