Neal Brown on WVU Football QBs Garrett Greene and Nicco Marchiol

Garrett Greene led WVU to its biggest win of the season on the road against TCU, but how close was he to not even playing again?

Well, West Virginia head coach Neal Brown opened up about what happened all week with his quarterbacks during his postgame press conference Saturday night. Brown told reporters that he was actually initially planning to start Nicco Marchiol before he suffered an ankle injury at practice on Wednesday.

Greene got the start and completed 10 out of 21 passes for 142 yards. More importantly, he ran for 80 yards on 12 carriers while scoring two touchdowns with his legs. He was far from perfect, but offered a spark to the offense after Marchiol failed to throw for 100 yards in both of his games, two wins over Pitt and Texas Tech.

Brown had previously said Greene was available as an emergency option last week, but would only play if absolutely necessary.

West Virginia now sits at 4-1 (2-0) with a much-needed bye week coming up. In their next game, the Mountaineers will travel to Houston.
