JJ Wetherholt Makes Triumphant Return, Lifts Mountaineers to Late Win Over Kansas

WVU Baseball star JJ Wetherholt

After such a great 2023 and so much hype all offseason, WVU baseball fans were only blessed with four games from JJ Wetherholt until Friday night. The reigning Big 12 Play of the Year made his triumphant return to action on the road against Kansas.

And in typical Wetherholt fashion, he delivered and led the Mountaineers to a much-needed win over a conference foe. West Virginia won a back and forth slug fest over the Jayhawks 11 to 10.

Wetherholt, who served as the designated hitter in his first game back, picked up three hits on four at-bats, drove in two runs, scored a run and was walked once while leading off for WVU.

A flare for the dramatic

Not only did Wetherholt perform in a win, but he drove in the game-winning run and saved the day to top it all off. Wetherholt crushed a two-out RBI double to put the Mountaineers back in front for good in the ninth, which served as a response to Kansas scoring three in the eighth to jump out in front.

West Virginia holds a 17-12 overall record, but the vibes with Wetherholt are surely different than they were playing without a super-star for 24 games. With Wetherholt back in the fold, the Mountaineers will look to win the series over Kansas on Saturday. First pitch from Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence is set for 3 pm ET.
