The 2-0 Mountaineers have an opportunity to truly prove themselves on Saturday night. A win and the rest of the country would be forced to recognize that WVU football is back. However, a loss and the first two wins may become invalidated due to the competition and the program may seem still far from contention.

And with a lot on the line, there’s a lot to focus in on when West Virginia and Virginia square off in a border war at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C.

Below are just some of the key storylines to keep an eye on during the game: 

Virginia HC Tony Elliott Describes Playing for Rich Rodriguez Ahead of Matchup

Saturday night’s premiere matchup between West Virginia and Virginia will be more than a border war. The game will also be put a coach vs. his former player, as Rich Rodriguez will try to make a statement against Tony Elliot.

Early in Rodriguez’s career, years before he took over the Mountaineers the first time, he served as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Clemson. And ironically enough based on where they are today, Elliot was a wide receiver under Rodriguez on those same Clemson teams.

Now leading up to going head-to-head, both as head coaches, Elliott talked about what it was like playing for Rodriguez and how much who the now 63-year-old head coach became was evident back then.

“What I remember about coach Rich Rod is…intense, very intense, very demanding, fast pace. He coached you hard, loved you just as hard,” said Elliot. He then added that he’s excited for the opportunity, meaning the chance to lead his No. 25 ranked Cavaliers team into battle against Rodriguez’s West Virginia squad, one that some feel is on the rise again.

WVU’s Rich Rodriguez Points to the True Power of Virginia’s Offense

Rodriguez knows Virginia’s experience, size and ability will be tough to overcome, although he still feels his group of Mountaineers can win if they play up to their capabilities.

In addition to bringing up the obvious, Rodriguez spent most of his Tuesday press conference pointing to the Cavaliers’ offensive line as what makes their team so successful. With the average age of Virginia’s offensive line at 24, WVU knows that their chemistry makes it unlikely to ever see a mistake from the unit.

They’re playing “a bunch of grown men,” Rodriguez said to describe the Virginia offensive line.

Virginia’s well disciplined offensive line helps to generate long drives and control the time of possession. Virginia, who prides itself on winning the time of possession battle used their ball control to win their first two games, a season opening win over North Carolina State and another over Norfolk State in Week 2. The Cavaliers held the ball for 38:03 against the Wolfpack en route to a 34-8 victory. That resulted in the offense putting up 413 yards.

More recently, Virginia racked up 466 yards while rolling over the Spartans 59-3.

Zac Alley Stresses Importance of Communication for WVU Defense

Despite a 52-7 victory for WVU over UT Martin, the coaching staff, namely Zac Alley, still has a higher standards for the team’s defense.

One aspect defensive coordinator Alley believes his unit needs to improve is communication. He said he reprimanded the defense the day after the game on Sunday.

“We’re being really quiet. Nobody’s talking. I laughed, I told them all… ‘There’s like two guys in the back end back there that they do all the communication. If they’re not in, we got no shot if nobody else talks,’” Alley explained during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Part of communication is being aware of assignments based on looks from the offense. Alley added if something changes, such as a formation or a motion, the players need to check with each other and verify everyone knows their role.

“We have to play with some anticipation of like, ‘Okay. Hey, if he motions, what are we doing?’ You know, not just, ‘Oh, well I hope he figures it out and he’s got him over there.’ Like, talk to each other and communicate,” Alley added.

West Virginia is slated to battle Virginia at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday at 7:30 pm ET.
