The University of Texas announced on Monday night that head men’s basketball coach Chris Beard will be suspended without pay. Beard has been charged with abusing a family member and was released from jail on Monday afternoon.

“The University takes matters of interpersonal violence involving members of its community seriously. Given the information available, The University has suspended Chris Beard from his position as head coach of Men’s Basketball and will withhold his pay until further notice. Associate Head Coach Rodney Terry will serve as acting head coach for tonight’s game against Rice.”

According to the arrest report, Beard choked the woman for five seconds. Beard also allegedly gave bite marks and bruises to the victim. The woman said her breathing was affected.

Beard is in his second season at his alma mater, coaching Texas. The 49-year-old has coached his Longhorns to a 7-1 start to the season. Texas is currently ranked No. 7 in the country.

It’s not known whether or not Beard will return to the program, if when.
